When to Plant Lupine Seeds

Direct sow in early Spring, as soon as the soil is able to be worked. You can also start Lupine seeds indoors, 4-8 weeks before the final frost of the Spring. In temperate climates, Lupine seeds can also be sown in the Fall, after the first killing frost.

Where to Plant Lupine Seeds

Choose a space with Full Sun conditions, or some light shade. Lupines do best in moist, well-draining, somewhat sandy and well-worked soil.

How to Plant Lupine Seeds

Lupine seeds require scarification prior to planting. This is a simple process that involves nicking the seeds with a knife or rubbing them with sandpaper or a file.

Direct sow your seeds onto the surface of the soil and compress, but do not cover, as Lupines need sunlight to germinate. Sprouts will appear in about 10-15 days.

How to Care for Lupine

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage additional flowering through the season. Taller varieties of Lupine may need staking as well. Don't cut down dead spikes in the Spring/summer, and instead wait until the fall. Likewise, seed pods can be harvested and saved for future plantings. For perennial Lupine, mulching in the winter can be beneficial for the roots. As Spring approaches, the mulching can be removed.

***At the moment, all Happy Gardening's products are typically shipped from one of our overseas facilities, so please allow up to 3-4 weeks to receive your purchase(s), though we've been seeing much quicker shipping times recently. Shipping time is typically dependent on how long customs take, which can vary from country to country.

For items that ship from our overseas supplier, there's typically a delay in tracking information being updated from the time the package enters USPS facilities in China to the time it's processed at USPS facilities in the US. This usually takes between 2-7 days on average, although it can take as long as 8-12 days. ***

Sometimes shipping times vary due to circumstances outside of our control, such as:

      • IR Disputes/Strikes
      • Weather
      • Time of Year (e.g. Holiday Season)
      • Large or Bulky Items
      • Shipping Provider Error

If any of the above scenarios occur with your package we promise to keep you well informed with as much information that is available to us.

        Lupinus Flower

For a reliable, colorful performance, start Lupine seeds and enjoy! For years, gardeners have been growing these perennials for a great source of vibrant late-spring to early summer color. The Russell lupine plants are vigorous with a spread of 12 - 16 inches wide, creating a bushy mat of bright green foliage beneath the bloom spikes. The mix includes shades of reds, pinks, blues, yellows, and whites in both solids and bi-colors. The flowers will attract attention from butterflies, hummingbirds and your neighbors! The plants prefer cooler climates. Where weather is hotter, provide some afternoon shade. Russell Lupine care is simply deadheading the faded flower spikes. They will self-sow if not trimmed back.  Many gardeners soak the seed for 24 hours prior to planting.

How Much Seed Do I Need?

        1. Measure

For Squares or Rectangles: measure the length and width of the space where you want to plant.

For Circles: find the radius - measure the widest part of your planting space and divide by 2.

        2. Calculate Square Footage

For Squares or Rectangles:  length (in feet)  x  width (in feet) = square feet

For example, a garden that measures 50 feet x 30 feet = 1500 sq. ft.

For Circles:   radius (in feet) x  radius  x 3.14 = square feet

        For example, a circular garden that is 20 feet across has a radius of 10 feet. 10 x 10 x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.

(The mathematical formula for the area of a circle is Π · r2 - the Π symbol is pronounced Pi and represents approximately 3.142, and r2 stands for radius squared.)

        3. Find How Much Seed You Need

The amount of seed you should plant depends on the flower display you want. We typically recommend planting on the higher side for a lush meadow. Plant on the lower side for a more scattered look.

For Individual Species: The recommended rates vary greatly from species to species. Check the product page, or contact us with questions.

For Wildflower Mixes: Reference the table below.

        This Much Seed Covers...This Much Square Footage1/4 lb250 - 500 sq. ft.1/2 lb500 - 1,000 sq. ft.1 lb1,000 - 2,000 sq. ft.5 lbs5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft.10 lbs10,000 - 25,000 sq. ft.Acreage

        • 1 Acre = 43,000 sq.ft.
        • 1/2 Acre = 21,500 sq. ft.
        • 1/4 Acre = 10,750 sq.ft.
        • 1/10 Acre = 4,300 sq. ft.

Tips For Larger Plantings: If you have a large site, from 1/2 acre to several acres, your planting rate may be affected by land conditions. If you have heavy weeds on the site now, some erosion, generally poor soil, or other land problems, additional seed is usually the most economical solution, since installation of a large planting usually costs more than the seed itself. If your site does have these problems and you want full coverage, use 1 pound per 1000 sq. ft.
